Elderbridge Agency on Aging hosted "Stepping On", a 7 week falls prevention program for senior citizens at the Manning Senior Center. The program helps participants to reduce their risk for falls through risk assessment, exercises, and discussions about safety. As a PT I was able to help with my expertise in exercise instruction, community mobility, and getting up from a fall. Participants learned simple exercises that they can do in their home to improve strength and balance. The exercises were reviewed and progressed at the weekly sessions. We were also able to go outside and demonstrate what risks to look for in the community and how to safely get in/out of a car. One of the participant's favorite things was the demonstration of a car cane, a device to put in the latch of a car to help with pushing up and out of a vehicle.
At the end of the 7 weeks the participants had more confidence walking at home and in the community.
